Yorgos Lanthimos, Regiespezialist fürs albtraumatische Kontrollkinospektakel, kehrt nach seinem furiosen Kritiker- und Publikumserfolg „Poor Things“ zu früheren Manipulations- und Hörigkeitsdramen zurück. In drei inhaltlich nicht miteinander verknüpften Episoden überantwortet er gemeinsam mit seinem langjährigen Drehbuchautor Efthymis Filippou sein Schauspieler-Ensemble in „Kinds of Kindness“ gewohnt bizarren Szenarien, die dem mit unterschiedlichen Hintergründen und Namen ausgestatteten Star-Personal – darunter Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons – mit Blick auf Partnerschaft, Liebe, Sex die gängigen Schutzräume entzieht. In Episode Eins lässt sich eine von Plemons gespielte Figur sein Berufs- und Privatleben bis ins Detail von seinem Chef diktieren. In Episode Zwei glaubt eine ebenfalls von Plemons verkörperte Person, seine Frau sei nach einem Unfall durch eine Doppelgängerin ersetzt worden. Und in der dritten Episode steht die Lanthimos-Muse Emma Stone im Mittelpunkt, deren Hörigkeit zu einem von Willem Dafoe gespielten Sektenführer thematisiert wird. Wie eh und je leuchtet Lanthimos die manipulativen Abgründe aus, die in uns Menschen schlummern – widergespiegelt im zitierten Eurythmics-Song „Sweet Dreams …“ Dass man mit dem Schauspieler-Reigen nie wirklich warm wird, schmälert allerdings auf Dauer das Interesse des Zuschauers.
