Auf zum Mond! In den 1960er Jahren hat sich die amerikanische Raumfahrtbehörde NASA ein hohes Ziel gesteckt: die ersten Menschen zum Mond zu schicken. Es ist ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit, denn die Konkurrenz in Gestalt der Sowjetunion arbeitet ebenso gewissenhaft daran, den Erdtrabanten zu erobern. Dem Erfolg der Apollo-11-Mission stehen jedoch permanent Hindernisse im Weg – weshalb man eine Marketing-Spezialistin namens Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) verpflichtet, um dem umstrittenen Projekt nach außen hin ein sauberes Image zu verpassen. Das passt Cole Davis (Channing Tatum), dem Leiter der Apollo-Mission, ebenso wenig wie der wahnwitzige Plan, die Mondlandung sicherheitshalber in einem Filmstudio zu inszenieren … Greg Berlantis historisch verbürgte NASA-Komödie „To the Moon“ nimmt mit viel Humor und Nostalgie die Mondlandungs-Hysterie und die wilden Spekulationen um eine gefälschte Mission aufs Korn. Und erweckt damit eine Ära, in der Kalte Krieger:innen der westlichen wie östlichen Welt alles unternahmen, um die öffentliche Meinung zu manipulieren.
